A Memo on Diabetic Shoes

Diabetic shoes are an incredibly important item for avoiding complications that surround the condition of diabetes. At one time, diabetic shoes were not available to all those that required them. Now, there are available in abundance to those who need them. However, not everyone understands the benefits of diabetic shoes.

Why are diabetic shoes important to wear? Diabetics have a tendency to develop foot problems. This is complicated when ulcers or infections develop. If untreated,  an infection could possibly lead to the amputation of the foot.

Diabetic shoes can curtail or eliminate this problem of ulcerated or infected feet.

A properly designed diabetic show will insure both safety and comfort and not impede an individual from being actively mobile in regards to normal daily functions. The difference between a diabetic shoe and a ‘regular’ shoe in terms of normal activity should be relatively minimal. However, when taking into consideration high stress sporting activities, the diabetic shoes will not provide significant protection. High stress on the feet should be avoided and, as such, certain sporting activities may have to be avoided.

One can not simply go to the shoe store and pick up a pair of diabetic shoes. Diabetic shoes are available by prescription only and the doctor must make a careful decision as to what type of shoes the patient is best suited.

Keep in mind that diabetic shoes are worn for the specific purpose of avoiding foot related problems and must be worn at any time weight is placed on the foot. Any and every time! If one is to avoid ulcerations and infections, one must take care and prevention against any situation that may cause them.

The next time you visit your doctor for a regularly scheduled foot check up, be sure to ask about diabetic shoes and if they are right for you.
